Educating the Heart

“Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.”

– Aristotle

What is a Heart-based Education?

What is the best way to educate our children? This simple question has been the topic of discussions, debates, lectures, and educational research for several years. Millions of dollars have been poured into the education industry in an effort to promote quality instruction and to prepare the next generation for meaningful careers. With all this attention on “academic rigor” and “college-readiness,” we have watched the development of the mind take center stage in the educational philosophy of the day. Unfortunately, a vital component of learning has diminished in importance in current secular thought. This missing link can be identified in this story that was related by Oliver DeMille.

This missing link that is being phased out of the American education system is what we refer to as the education of the heart. It is in the heart where character, ethics, and values are found. It is in the heart where we find the power to choose, the willingness to sacrifice, and the passion to persevere against all odds. It’s not what’s in our minds that inspires greatness; it’s what is in our hearts.

To better understand the concept of Educating the Heart, we highly recommend reviewing the audios from the Well-Educated Heart website. The audios are all listed down the left side of the front page.

We also recommend viewing the video presentations “What is a Heart-based Education” and “Five Essential Elements for Conditioning the Heart” found on the Hearthstone Education Plan website.
