What Can I Do to Prepare My Child for College?

The best way to prepare your child for college is to create a curriculum plan that helps them develop the basic skills needed to succeed in college. This process starts long before high school age, but it is never too late to start. Smart Degree can help you get ready when they are in the middle and high school grades. But you can start as early as preschool.

Reading to your children early and often is a great way to start. It helps children become good and enthusiastic readers. Basic math skills — building up to algebra — will help prepare them for college level math. And writing is essential. They need to learn how to write — and they need to learn how to write well. This will not only help them in college, it will be a huge asset to them throughout their lives.

If you believe your child is ready for college-level work, there’s a free tool you can use to gauge progress. It’s part of Smart Degree™ Homeschool Advantage, and shows you current readiness for college work in English, writing, and math. You also get free practice assignments to prepare or brush up.

Homemakers for America has developed the Hearthstone Education Plan in an effort to support families in their homeschool experience. One of the resources they offer is the Essential Skills and Knowledge list. It is a list of skills our children need to develop to nurture their hearts and minds and prepare them for college and life. The list is divided by subject in three age categories: 0 to 8 years, 8 to 12 years, and over 12 years. This is a unique resource that will help you see what your child needs to prepare for college-level work while developing a lifelong love of learning, grounded in the values that matter to you and your family.
